World War II was an era of heroes. The whole world knew about their achievements. Heroes were becoming legends. One of them was shooter Vasily Zaytsev.

Vasily Grygoryevich Zaytsev was born on March 23, 1915 in a simple peasant family. From childhood he learned to hunt, and at the age of 12 he received his first rifle as a gift. His grandfather's hunting advice was very useful for the future hero. Vasily said the shooter was supposed to be invisible. The ability to camouflage was always number one for him. There was no time for him as he waited for another target. And, of course, his extraordinary composure and self-control. All this made him a first-class hunter. In addition, Vasily was also physically gifted: an eagle eye, a good ear and endurance did not leave a single chance for the enemy who fell into the eyes of his sniper.

World War II brought the future hero to the position of chief financial officer of the Pacific Fleet, where he served since 1937. Zaytsev had a good position and was highly valued by the command. By the summer of 1942, however, Vasily had applied five times for a request to be sent to the front. His request was accepted, and Zaytsev was sent to the 284th Rifle Division. On a September night in 1942, he was sent along with other recruits across the Volga to defend Stalingrad. He came to the city, where he uttered the words that caused confusion: “For us, the soldiers and commanders of the 62nd Army, there is no land beyond the Volga. We stood and stand dead!"

Zaytsev came to the front as a simple soldier, he did not immediately become a shooter. He fought several times hand to hand with the enemy. He even managed to get a bayonet wound, but he never left the ranks. However, in the very first battles, he declared himself an excellent shooter. He defeated the enemy at a distance of 800 meters with a simple 3-barreled rifle M1891. Only a month after the battle, Vasily received the medal "For Courage". By that time, Zaitsev had killed 32 enemy soldiers with his rifle without a sniper's scope. But his main prize was a sniper rifle with an optical sight, which was given to him along with the medal. Almost immediately, the reputation of the invincible sniper spread to all fronts. Using his own name, Zaytsev inspired Soviet soldiers and spread panic among German soldiers.

Zaytsev defeated his enemy with a simple 3-barreled rifle M1891 (Mosin Nagant). He went through the whole war with this gun, only the optical sight changed. The first and simplest was the "PU" sight with a four-power telescope. Now this weapon is kept in the "Battle of Stalingrad" museum and everyone can see it.

In order to at least somehow strengthen the morale of the soldiers and lower the activity of the Soviet sniper, the German command decided to send the head of the sniper school, Major Erwin König (according to other sources - Heinz Torwald, probably König was the call sign) . He was given the order to defeat "the most important Russian rabbit". The Soviet command was alarmed by this fact, and Zaytsev was ordered to defeat the German ace at all costs.

"I knew the "script" of German snipers - recalls Vasily Zaytsev - I easily separated more experienced snipers from beginners, cowards from stubborn and stubborn children under fire and their ability to camouflage. What is the character of a leader for the enemy. sniper school, it remained a mystery to me. Observing comrades daily did not give no concrete result. It was difficult to say where the fascist was. But there was one story. My friend - sniper Morozov's optical sight was broken by the enemy, and soldier Shaikin was wounded. Morozov and Shaikin were considered experienced snipers, they often came out victorious in difficult and severe battles with the enemy. There was no doubt - they met the fascist "super-shooter" I was looking for.

Zaytsev previously took the position of Morozov and Shaikin. He had with him a constant close friend, Nikolai Kulikov. They knew the top of every hill, every rock. Zaytsev's attention was drawn to a pile of bricks and a metal plate next to it. This is where the "guest" from Berlin got the shuttle. Nikolai Kulikov waited for the order to fire to attract the enemy's attention. At the same time, Zaytsev pointed out. The whole day went like this.

Before sunrise the warriors returned to the ambush. Zaytsev was in one well, Kulikov was in another. A communication cable was stretched between them. Time passed. Airplanes buzzed overhead. Somewhere nearby, shells and mines exploded. But Vasily did not pay attention, he opened his eyes to the metal plate.

When it dawned and the enemy's positions were clearly separated, Zaytsev drew the line. It was a signal for his companion to put a glove on the tablet. The expected shooting did not follow from that side. An hour later, Kulikov lifted the glove again. The long-awaited shot rang out. The hole confirmed Zaytsev's assumption, the fascist was under the sheet metal. Now they had to bring him into view.

However, they could not hurry so as not to frighten him. Zaitsev and Kulikov exchanged positions. They watched all night. And they also waited half a day. And in the afternoon, when the enemy's position was in direct sunlight and the snipers' guns were in shadow, the sniper duet went into action. Something flickered at the edge of the metal plate. A random shard of glass? No, it was the optical sight of a fascist sniper's rifle. Kulikov began to lift the helmet as carefully as an experienced shooter could. A fascist shot. The helmet fell off. The German apparently decided that he had won the battle - he killed the Soviet sniper, whom he had been hunting for 4 days. Deciding to check the result of his shot, he stuck half the head out. And that's when Zaitsev missed the trigger. He hit it right. The fascist's head lowered, and the optical sight of his gun shone into the night ...

The command congratulated Vasilia on the necessary duel and gave his group a new important task. Zaytsev and 13 soldiers had to cut off the German attack on one of the Stalingrad front lines. Zaytsev practiced a new battle tactic in this hunt for the task force. The mission was accomplished, but Vasily made an open attack on the German infantry in the heat of battle and was seriously wounded. The Germans fired a salvo at him and the enemy troops. It was the one where the big shooter went down. Zaytsev fainted for a moment. However, Zaytsev lost his sight. However, after several surgeries, he regained his sight and on February 10

For the rest of the military time, Zaytsev was the head of the sniper school and the commander of the mortar group, and later the company commander. He also took part in the battles for Donbass, Dnieper and Odessa. He achieved victory in the second world was in the position of captain. Vasily Zaytsev received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the Order of Lenin and the "Golden Star" medal. In Stalingrad alone, he defeated 225 enemy soldiers and officers, 11 of whom were snipers. The snipers of the 62nd

Inspired by the achievements of their comrades, the army defeated more than six thousand German soldiers. During the war he published two sniper books, he also developed a sniper shop called "six". And after the war, he participated in the testing of the army's SVD rifle.

Vasily Zaytsev said: “A good shooter is a lively shooter. Sniper's performance is such that he does his job over and over again. To succeed in this hard work, you have to make an achievement every day and every minute: defeat the enemy and stay alive!"

Zaytsev managed to defeat about 240 enemy soldiers during the war. This number was average for effective marksmen in that war. But Soviet propaganda made him the Red Army's most famous marksman. As history stands, some historians doubt the existence of Zaytsev's main enemy, Major König, but we do not doubt that the duel was a coincidence. And there is no doubt about their number
