The US Army awarded Sig Sauer a contract for a new modular pistol system in January 2017. By 2018, other service branches had placed their orders for the M17 and M18 variants.
As of November 2019, Sig Sauer has shipped more than 100,000 new guns. In November 2020, deliveries reached 200,000 - the first month that pistols were sent to all military units at the same time.
The M17 and its compact M18 variant are the latest in a long line of sidearms that American troops have carried into combat since 1776.

The first weapons of the US military were often privately owned. Officers who could afford more expensive weapons usually had dueling pistols, while commoners made do with what they obtained from local gunsmiths. This led to the creation of different weapons of different calibers and qualities.
The Continental Congress tried to purchase a standard weapon for the Continental Army. His pistol of choice was a direct copy of the British Model 1760 flintlock pistol. Congress purchased 2,000 pistols, called the Model 1775, manufactured by the Rappahannock Forge in Virginia.
The 62-caliber smoothbore single-shot flintlock, with an iron or ash rod under the barrel, is believed to be the first pistol issued by the US military.
The weapon was well received during the revolution. After the war, a new version known as the Model 1805 was developed at Harper's Ferry. This flintlock saw service in the War of 1812 and remained the standard issue pistol of the US Army for over 50 years.

Two Model 1805s are featured on US Army Military Police Corps insignia, and a similar weapon can be seen on the US Navy SEAL insignia.
The new weapon allowed a soldier to fire six rounds in a matter of seconds without stopping to reload. It also used percussion caps that allowed soldiers to fire reliably in wet weather.

The most famous Colt design of the 19th century was the Colt Army Model 1860, a 44-caliber revolver adopted just before the Civil War. Large numbers were used by the Union and the Confederacy—130,000 were built for the Union alone, and more than 200,000 were produced by the time production ceased in 1873.

The Army received its first M17s in June 2017. The Air Force began taking delivery in June 2019, and the Marine Corps officially began fielding the M18 in September.
The guns can be configured for different missions and have a rail where accessories such as lasers and optical sights can be mounted. Their standard capacity of 17 9mm cartridges can be increased to 21 with an extended magazine. The SIG Sauer M17 and M18 are service pistols derived from the SIG Sauer P320 used in the US Armed Forces. On January 19, 2017, the US Army announced that a customized version of SIG Sauer's P320 had won the Army's XM17 Modular Pistol System competition. The full-size model was designated the M17, and the shorter carrier model was designated the M18.
The weapons were later adopted by the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force. The pistol replaces the Beretta M9 as well as several other pistols in the services. There are two color options for both the M17 and M18, coyote brown and black, almost all of which are produced in brown.

On January 19, 2017, the US Army announced that the SIG Sauer P320 MHS variant had won the Army's Modular Weapons System trials. The modified P320 was later designated the M17 (Full Size) and M18 (Carry) for US military service. The M17 has better accuracy, ergonomics and a tighter dispersion than the Beretta M9 and will be offered more widely and released to staff and fire team leaders. US special operations forces operators are all dual armed with pistols and rifles. Junior leaders in regular infantry units, previously prohibited from carrying sidearms, will be given more options and options in close combat situations under the new policy.
