Schofield Barracks Gym - I have been trying to visit Kekoa CrossFit at Schofield Barracks, Wahiawa, Oahu for some time now. They are located on the base on the last racquetball court in the Martinez Fitness Center (Building 488). Kekoa CrossFit is a non-profit military affiliate, so membership is free and open! They follow the main program of the site. They have one class from Monday to Friday at 9am, but you can stay as long as you want!
A big mahalo to Megan, the coach, for letting me in... and giving up her time to teach every day! Kekoa CrossFit has a strong and close community. A consistent group of people go to class every day to train together, to motivate themselves and just for the true love of CrossFit. They come together outside of CrossFit. Working here reminded me of working out at our old place in Mountain View... very garage feeling. They don't have the nicest equipment or too much of it. Sometimes you have to wait or fight for equipment from other people who use the fitness center. But the atmosphere quickly outweighed the quirks. The level of passion, motivation and desire to learn is high.

Also, when I worked with the women's class here, I was reminded why I CrossFit ... break down to simple reasons. Don't get me wrong, I love CrossFit and everything, but with the heat of open houses, competitions, etc., it's easy to get carried away. I also CrossFit to stay physically active, healthy, sane, and because I love it. My favorite element is the strong community/cult/whatever you want to call it, both inside and outside of NorCal CrossFit and my blog supporters and readers. I like to push myself and others. The point of CrossFit is to get better, not beat the people around me (especially not with a questionable movement!). The only competition is with me. It's a good time to think about this, especially after showing myOpen WOD2 this morning.
Of The Best Things To Do Near Schofield Barracks
I know I normally do pro/cons reviews of all the gyms I visit, but come on, Kekoa CrossFit is a non-profit. People like Megan, Jason and Andrea volunteer their time to even make CrossFit classes possible. We appreciate their time, dedication and commitment. Then, here's what the class did:
I lifted up to 130# on the clean, 135# on the overhead squat (a PR for me!!!) and 100# on the bench. Yes Yes.
As a non-profit organization, Kekoa CrossFit relies heavily on the generosity and motivation of service members to keep the program alive. If you are a DoD card holder, have some free time, or just want to volunteer, let Megan know. Here's how you can help. Thank you for visiting me. I look forward to my next visit!
