The 95,000-ton Nimitz carried more than 8,000,000 people, most of them military personnel in uniform. As much as the President loves the game of basketball, the original purpose of the event was to celebrate the members of the US Armed Forces and their families and ensure that our nation's heroes do the right thing:
This week, we celebrate our veterans all week long, but we need to put our words into practice. That's why we've made sure Congress passes legislation that makes it a little easier for businesses to hire our veterans. We've made a number of improvements to help veterans find the counseling and jobs they need. With his first wife, Dr. Jill Biden, he put together something called the Joint Task Force, and now he has delivered on his pledge — 100,000 jobs for veterans and military spouses. We are grateful to them for their efforts. But today, every American citizen can pledge to take some time to support our troops, active duty, National Guard, reservists and veterans.
