Can't say enough about the customer service and kindness of the maintenance people. We have only had positive experiences with it. They really care and you can tell.

Town Hall Visit

This is actually our first time living on post in my husband's 16 years in the military. We weren't sure what to expect, but we're glad we took the chance and decided to go live on the post!

I always have great customer service when I need something. Every maintenance person or housing office employee is extremely friendly and helpful!

The office staff was always friendly and obliging, and the maintenance crew was very helpful to us - always going above and beyond our service requests. FORT BENNING, Ga., (July 15, 2015) -- The Villages of Benning, the private housing company responsible for leasing approximately 4,000 postal homes, announced in early May that they open post offices to military retirees, widowed spouses and Department of Defense and Federal Agency civilians working at Fort Benning.

"We're not the first installation to do this," said Heather Bearden, marketing coordinator for the Villages of Benning. "Many installations have already started this process."

With the recent DOD budget cuts, the decision was made to open up housing to more active duty soldiers to help offset the shortfall in occupancy and to address the growing need.

"I think right now the selling point, especially for us opening it up to now, is the convenience factor," Bearden said. "Many retirees are interested in postal life to have that legacy and be close to the facilities they use - the Post Exchange, the Commissary and the clinic at the new Benning Martin Community Hospital.

"Those places they frequent. And on other lanes it saves them the hassle of driving every morning - with the new gate policy it saves time and they can go home for a quick lunch instead of 30 minutes away -on," he said.

Bearden also discussed the current decline in , and the plan the Village of Benning has in place for when these numbers start to pick up again.

"Right now we're down, but that could change. If it changes, we have a cap on it; so if a neighborhood is 93 percent occupied, we'll allow active duty military to live there because our first priority. is the service member and their family, so we always make sure we have a place for them.

The Villages of Benning has opened several housing options to its citizens, including Custer Duplexes, Indianhead Village, MacDonald Village, and Bouton Heights Village.

The cost is $1,278 per month, which is determined by averaging all basic housing allowances received by soldiers in participating villages, Bearden said.

That price includes rent, electricity, water, garbage and landscaping. Internet and cable not included. The lease is for 12 months and breaking the lease requires 60 days notice and is equivalent to one month's rent.

Legacy' Families Offered New Start

The Villages of Benning is also very pet friendly and there is no pet fee or pet deposit for the first two pets.

"We're very excited to offer it," Bearden said. "I think we have a lot of options for anyone looking for a postal place. It's a good opportunity to be close to work, go home and avoid the hassle of the gate, and gain work experience. "

So far about 10 homes have been filled with civilians and more are expected to be filled in July.
